What is Tech ?

Tech, Tec, Tek, Technical Diving = Commercial ?

Technical diving brings people to thinking of the commercial side of diving. This is a wrong idea.
Technical diving is a fast growing extreme sport allowing divers to go well beyond the depths of classic recreational diving !!!

It is made for people who accept the risks of decompression diving and who are ready to handle the extra required planning and equipment to go deeper and stay much, much longer !

You may ask "why would any diver want to go in to the murky dark waters and take extra risks doing so???"

Well if it's true that technical diving is not for everybody, the water is not murky and you get to see things only a handful of other people will ever see.
- Deep wrecks laying there for years with treasure and trinkets laid undisturbed and waiting to be found.
- It gives you access to the marine life of the "twilight zone", where you can se species that may not even be discovered
- To stay underwater for a long time below 30 metres, technical diving is the only way to go, allowing you to completely explore a site (Wreck, Reef, Wall) and complete your mission on it (mapping, research, photography)

How does it work ?

When technical diving, we use multiple cylinders (tanks) containing different gas mixes, and switch to different mixes depending on the depth we are at so that we optimise our inert gas intake/release at any stage of the dive, and minimize decompression.
As we dive deeper and longer, we rarely stay inside the no decompression limits, so direct ascent to the surface is no more an option. That's why we plan our dives and dive our plan, and back up all our equipment (2 buoyancy control devices, two masks, backup regulator on the main gas,...) so that we are self sufficient underwater and can complete our ascent with the required stop even in case of an emergency.

With the use of mixed gases Oxygen, Helium and Nitrogen you can even dive deeper for even longer, avoiding the problems of narcosis (a lot longer but it never seems long enough). The deeper you dive the more cylinders you will require however the benefits from this slight inconvenience is wayed out by what you will get to experience on every dive.
Technical diving is a great sport and we are lucky enough in Thailand to have 30 degrees of water even when we dive to 85 metres. Rarely do you need to use a torch on any of the 60 metres deep wrecks in the Gulf of Thailand unless you are into full penetration. Speak to people who are Tech divers and they will tell you they would never look back. In fact most give up single cylinder diving to be self sufficient at all time and to concentrate on solo diving and/or on the deep stuff!!!

Sounds Cool !! What do I need to start ?

There are various courses available in technical diving, with various agencies. TecEvolution Thailand teaches Rebreathers and Technical Diving with TDI and DSAT, check out the available courses and the detail and pre requisites of each course and then contact us for any information.

If you want to stay deeper even longer, think about having a look at our Closed Circuit Rebreather Page and at the available Rebreather courses at TecEvolution Pattaya.
